CafeWriting began in October, 2007. Inspired by the long-defunct Alchera Project, it is a collection of prompts presented approximately monthly, for interested readers and writers to use for inspiration. Each collection is referred to as a single Project. As of 2010, it also includes weekly Thursday Threesome posts.

After the prompts have been up for a while, and participants have submitted their links, a Participants Page is posted, collecting the responses to the given Project. Submissions are accepted and links are added, until the next Project is posted.

Some Projects have themes; some do not.
